Medical chart audit reveals telling treatment patterns for pharmaceutical company

For example, in one case study, a Contract Research Organization (CRO) needed medical chart auditing services. The data needed to be collected and clinically abstracted quickly for a project for a large international pharmaceutical company. The purpose of the health outcomes study was to research current treatment patterns for Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC). The study results would then be compared to the actual outcomes among patients treated with second-line chemotherapy regimens. The CRO realized that the challenges of quickly collecting the data residing in disparate systems all across the country and “blinding” the medical records as stipulated by the study requirements would be difficult to overcome. Outcomes was assigned to this project to perform data retrieval, chart review and real-time reporting in a short timeframe in order to meet the CRO’s commitment to their pharmaceutical company’s client.

We collected detailed clinical information to identify treatment patterns, cancer staging and other data elements not available in claims or administrative data. Following the instructions from the CRO, we selected a sampling of study members for chart abstraction based on the presence of a diagnosis of SCLC in their claims data. Then our experienced Clinical Audit Team combed through the data, drawing upon their clinical knowledge to deliver the objective results during the medical chart audit process.
